Also referred to as Kutaisi University, Akaki Tsereteli State University was founded in Tbilisi, Georgia, in July 1930. It is currently housed in Kutaisi. Based on Tbilisi State University, the university was established. Under the leadership of Georgian historian Ivane Javakhishvili, Tbilisi State University was founded in 1918. After Georgia had already been subjugated by the Soviet Union in July 1930, Tbilisi State University was closed and four separate universities were established in its stead. Among those colleges was State Pedagogical Institute. The State Pedagogical Institute relocated to Kutaisi on January 8, 1933, and Tbilisi State University was reopened. Located in the city’s center and currently known as Kutaisi University, it was founded on February 13, 1933. 

To continue their university studies, up to 700 scholars relocated from Tbilisi to Kutaisi. Established in the year 1980, Akaki Tsereteli University is a university of higher learning situated in Kutaisi, Georgia.
