The largest city in eastern Romania and the county seat of Iai is Iași. From 1564 until 1859, the city served as the capital of the Principality of Moldavia; from 1859 to 1862, it was the capital of the United Principalities; and from 1916 until 1918, it served as the capital of Romania. Iași is regarded as “The Cultural Capital of Romania” and has a significant place in Romanian history. No Romanian should be unaware of it, according to antiquarian Nicolae Iorga. Iași is the main commercial and financial hub of the Moldavian region of Romania, and it is still referred to as “The Moldavian Capital”.
