Grodno State Medical University, sometimes known as GrSMU (Belarusian for “Grodno State Medical University”), is a university located in Grodno, Belarus. Its areas of expertise are medical psychology and medicine. It is the nation’s oldest medical school and, in the opinion of some foreign publications, the country’s greatest medical university.

The Grodno Medical Academy, founded in 1775 by the former mayor of Grodno, Antoni Tyzenhaus, was the first medical school in Belarus and was intended to improve the nearly nonexistent healthcare system in the city. Its first rector was Jean-Emmanuel Gilibert, a French botanist, physician, and Freemason. Under his administration, a chemist’s store and a botanical garden were constructed, and first doctors—previously illiterate peasants—were trained. The academy developed so rapidly that it was reformed as Vilna University’s Medicine Faculty in 1781.

The Grodno Medical University underwent renovations only in 1958, during the Soviet era. First of all, despite being a tiny institution, it had one of the greatest theoretical and practical foundations in BSSR. received university status officially only in 2000. The institution is divided into 45 departments that are located all throughout the city.

The main structure, 80 Gorkogo St., was finished in 1974. To provide students real-world exposure, many departments are housed in state hospitals. The university contains two gyms, a scientific library, and four residence halls for students. GrSMU also has a computer center, a hepatological center, and a few research labs.

Using the training of highly qualified specialists in the field of various faculties available, the university (Grodno Medical University) features and acts upon a vision to become the leading educational center in the health care system of the Grodno region, Republic of Belarus, and other world countries.
