Following years of training medical students at Hai Phong University, Hanoi Medical University formally built its second campus there in 1979. In 1985, the second campus was established as a branch of Haiphong Medical University under Hanoi Medical University.
Hai Phong Medical University was created in 1999 under Prime Minister’s Decision No. 06/1999/QĐ-TTg, based on the Hai Phong Medical University branch campus. On November 11, 2013, the Prime Minister signed Resolution No. 2153/QD-TTg, renaming Hai Phong Medical University Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy and placing it under the Ministry of Health’s jurisdiction.
The university’s objective is to develop as a medical and pharmaceutical research and training center, transferring eminent technology domestically and worldwide, to provide high-quality medical workers to address people’s health and safety needs, particularly in the medical field.
It presently employs over 700 people and faculty, comprising 500 full-time university employees and 200 hospital employees, including seven professors. 28 associate professors. 77 doctorate students, 180 master’s degree holders, 65 specialists or similar physicians, and 285 part-time instructors at major clinics. After nearly 40 years of construction and expansion, it has trained over 10,000 doctors, nurses, and postgraduates who are highly valued by local medical institutions across the country. Since 2015, the university’s annual enrollment has been 950 undergraduates and 300 PhD students.
