It was formerly a medical school affiliated with the University of Saigon, established in 1947 by French settlers during the French Indochina period. Professor C. Macias was the principal. It was situated at 28 Testard/Tran Quy Cap Street, District 3, Ho Chi Minh City (now Bo Van Thanh Street). The school was divided into two portions on August 31, 1961, by the Government of the Republic of Vietnam. Saigon Medical University and Saigon Pharmaceutical University. Saigon Dental College was founded in 1964 as a department inside the Faculty of Medicine.
Following the Vietnam War in 1976, the Communist Party of Vietnam administration united his three schools, renaming them Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy. At his first headquarters, he had two floors of offices, a library, a conference room for lectures, and three adjoining study areas.
Basic scientific and medicine training facilities were spread throughout Ho Chi Minh City, including the Pasteur Institute (parasite and microbiological research), the Human Research Institute (anatomy), and the Saigon Hospital (chemistry). The Human Body Institute’s facilities were utilized to investigate histology, physiology, illness, and anatomy. By 1961, the institution had medical and pharmacy students enrolled. The Faculty of Pharmacy relocated at Nam Kiko Igia Street.
On November 16, 1966, the center relocated to a well-equipped medical study center (Hongbang Street, District 5), where medical and dental students continue to study. It contains a 500-seat main auditorium and three 300-seat auditoriums.
