Newcastle University, officially known as the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, is a public research university in the United Kingdom with campuses abroad in Singapore and Malaysia. It is headquartered in Newcastle upon Tyne, North East England. The university is a red brick institution and a part of the Russell Group, a coalition of UK universities that prioritize research. As one of the ten universities in the Russell Group to receive the Gold TEF rating, it is the recipient of the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) Gold Award. The institution’s founding fathers were the College of Physical Science (after renamed Armstrong College) and the School of Medicine and Surgery (later the College of Medicine), both of which were formed in 1834. Together with the Durham Colleges, these two institutions formed one section of the federal University of Durham. In 1937, the colleges in Newcastle united to become King’s College. King’s College changed its name to Newcastle upon Tyne University in 1963 as a result of a Parliamentary Act. 

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Medical Sciences, and the Faculty of Science, Agriculture, and Engineering comprise the three faculties that make up the university. The university provides around 340 postgraduate teaching and research programs in several disciplines, in addition to about 175 full-time undergraduate degree programs in a variety of subject areas including the arts, sciences, engineering, and medicine. In 2017–18, the organization brought in £495.7 million, of which £109.4 million came from contracts and grants for research, while it spent £483.3 million. Currently, Newcastle University holds one of the UK’s largest portfolios of EU research projects.
