Located in Luzhou, Sichuan, China, Southwest Medical University was once known as Luzhou Medical College. In 1951, the university was established. Southwest Medical University is included in the International Medical Education Directory (IMED) and is administered by the Sichuan regional government in addition to the World Health Organization (WHO). 

Zhongshan and Chengbei, the university’s two campuses combined, span 1,004,700 square meters. The Southwest Medical University in Luzhou oversees seven first-class disciplines, forty-two secondary disciplines, seven units for professional degree conferral, one key discipline of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and six provincial important disciplines in addition to domains for Master’s degree awarding. 

The seven fields offered by Southwest Medical University (Luzhou) include medicine, science, management, engineering, law, literature, and education. There are 26 undergraduate majors available. Clinical medicine is ranked in the top 1% of all fields by the ESI Global Ranking. Preclinical and Clinical Cardiovascular Diseases, Preclinical and Translational Medicine of Oncology, and Preclinical and Clinical Medicine of Integrated Traditional Chinese Medicine with Western Medicine are the three outstanding discipline groups at SWMU. The Science of Law, Provincial Medical Jurisprudence Research Center, Journal of “Medicine and Law,” and Judicial Identification Center combine to establish the “Four-in-one” disciplinary features in medical jurisprudence. 

There are 17,000 students at Southwest Medical University, who come from all around China as well as many other nations, such as Germany, Japan, India, etc. 520 of the 2,560 staff members are professors and associate professors. In 1996, Southwest Medical University opened enrollment to foreign students. It passes with an 81.9% percentage. 

With 15,500 patient beds overall, it consists of 39 teaching hospitals and 5 non-subordinating institutions. The institution maintains international student exchange and scientific research exchange partnerships with more than nine nations, including the USA, Germany, Japan, and the SAARC neighbors.
